In “Transfer of Learning from management development programmes: testing the Holton model,” Kirwan & Birchall (2006) test Holton’s (1996) model for human resource development evaluation research in order to investigate the fit between the factors in Holton’s (1996) model and those found in the literature, as well as whether or not the relationships claimed in Holton’s (1996) model are supported in practice. Kirwan & Birchall apply the Learning Transfer System Inventory instrument developed out of Holton’s (1996) model in a training context and analyze responses using multiple regression and partial correlation techniques. They found that the relationships in Holton’s (1996) model are supported in practice; however, they also found room for improvement of the model, suggesting a more central role for personal capacity for transfer.
